“I like the lonely nostalgia of Nothing holds like Texas. Every line is a standalone, but they all work together. It comes from someone with a seasoned life. The juxtaposition of the existential with the specific (material and descriptive) creates a dreamy vibe (like watching a surreal film installation), and reminds me of the moldy peaches. I like how big you go with the devil takes what he can get and the circus, allegorical and cosmic. There is a sense of regret and homesickness running through the whole thing. I don't mean for Texas, more like the past and certain people.
"I died somewhere listening to Metallica." "we slept among the bugs" "i put my face into the water/i peered into the deep end/the deep end peered at me"
At times it's country, then freak folk, then pop folk, then straight crooner's lament. There's a poetic rhythm of Dylan at times, other times I hear some Elliott Smith, some Devendra B., and some Daniel Johnson. Also the moldy peaches.
I loved all of it. Brilliant. Thank you for sharing it with me. I can't wait to hear the album. xo,pq”
