Soapbox: Tonal Simmons

Join multi-disciplinary artist Tonal Simmons in an artist workshop on world building—

What goes into making art, especially a photograph? Join me for a collaborative workshop as we discuss how art-making is world-building. We'll explore the influences that shape our creations and engage in a communal process to discuss, plan, and execute a set of three images. Together, we'll move as a group, tackle any challenges, and create something truly unique.

Artist info:

Through portraiture, Tonal (tuh-nawl) Simmons creates spaces where Black Queer and Trans individuals are celebrated and seen. As a non-binary artist, they are drawn to the intersection of Queerness, Transness, and Black personhood. Born of the Midwest, you will see nature, deep hues, and long gazes in their work, revealing the multifaceted reality of identity and environment. They are particularly drawn to the interplay between gender expression and the natural world and how gender expression and community, intertwined with elements of nature, collectively tell a story of Black liberation through the lens of queerhood.
