Home Comforts 2021
Comfort Station is pleased to announce Home Comforts, our second annual auction to raise funds in support of Comfort Station’s programming and working artists in Chicago. In our inaugural auction in 2020 we raised $32,000, with $20,000 going to participating artists and $12,000 supporting Comfort Station's operations, featuring one-of-a-kind commissioned works by Edra Soto, Jacqueline Surdell, Luftwerk, Norman Teague, Studio Herron, Cody Hudson, The Weaving Mill, and many others. Rather than auctioning pre-made works, this model allowed buyers to bid on unique commissions that were responsive to the collector and their home. In this year’s edition of Home Comforts we are repeating this successful approach plus adding a second category, Deep Cuts, featuring a selection of existing works.
We were pleased to see so many artists and patrons respond enthusiastically to last year’s Home Comforts, and heard from many people excited about our model based on raising money for artists at the same time as we fundraised to support our programming. Through this auction we also sought to connect new patrons with the artists involved in order to deepen the network of support for the arts community at a precarious time in the height of a pandemic. With this in mind, Deep Cuts is our latest effort to deepen this network even further, inviting artists to pull special works from their studio inventory and offer them up for auction, with proceeds split between the artist and Comfort Station. In the frenetic pace of making and showing work in the gallery circuit, many artists’ pieces often find their way back into the studio and off the immediate market. Deep Cuts aims to bring these works back into circulation, offering collectors unique pieces from different points in the artists’ careers.
Through both our Commissions and Deep Cuts offerings in Home Comforts, Comfort Station seeks to support our work as a free multidisciplinary art space in conjunction with the community of artists and patrons that make our work possible.
