The Adiaphora Orchestra, founded in 2017 by percussionist and composer Adam Shead, is a modular chamber ensemble based in Chicago, Illinois. Primarily focused on improvisation, conduction, and instant composition, the orchestra consists of a diverse group of rising star musicians from a variety of musical idioms. With an instrumentation that includes strings, brass, woodwinds, and rhythm sections, the ensemble performs "indifference music," which resists traditional musical structures and hierarchies. The group's debut album, Miniature Paintings and the Impossible Warehouse, released in 2020, explores contrasting concepts of scale—combining micro-scale, miniature forms with the expansive and surreal "impossible warehouse." This album reflects themes of delusion, paranoia, imitation, and interpersonal relations. The Adiaphora Orchestra’s performances emphasize creating unique, unbound expressions that challenge conventional norms in music.
