Description: Chicago video artist Maya Roussell presents an experimental video work honoring the history of the Chicago live music scene. The piece acts as a love letter to the musicians who have used their art to shape our city, from Mahalia Jackson to the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Big Bill Broonzy to the familiar voices of today’s Chicago street performers. By exploring the interconnectivity between our past and present, we situate our creation, experimentation and vision within a shared cultural memory, which endlessly shapes us just as we shape it. This film will feature a live score performed by Erez Dessel, Tyler Wagner, and Scott Taylor. The music created for this film draws on free improvisation, as well as the long history of music in Chicago, from the early jazz of the 20s, the experimental bands that grew out of the AACM, the electrified blues of the late 20th century, and various rock and electronic artists from the last 20 years.
