Comfort Music: Maunu/Helt/Riggs/Rodriguez/Gargula

Hailing from southwest Michigan, Braeden Rodriguez seeks to make art that is both sincere and arresting. They combine the raw unpredictability of no-input mixing board with austere synthesizer textures and field recordings.

A transplant from Los Angeles, guitarist/violinist Peter Maunu has performed and recorded with countless musicians including Billy Cobham, The Commodores, Charlie Haden, Charles Lloyd, Joni Mitchell, Jean-Luc Ponty, Archie Shepp, Grace Slick, Tony Williams, and the Oakland Symphony.

Christopher Riggs is an autistic person who plays experimental music on the electric guitar. Without the use of processing or effects, they squeeze sounds from their guitar the Chicago Reader has called “unapologetically ugly.”

Evangeline Gargula plays quiet things very loudly. She likes to use her breath because fingers can be abrupt. Sometimes she is accompanied by the mundane.

Keith Helt is a person who plays guitar with other people and alone. He runs the pan y rosas discos netlabel and organizes experimental music shows at the Jefferson Park branch of the Chicago Public Library.
