Dark and Hot: An Obscuring of Tropical Tropes

Dark and Hot is an incantation experiment to resist the flattening clichés that surround the tropics; it is a performance lecture in the guise of a party where we will be listening to songs that speak to the feeling of "tropical gothic", spanning several genres like classic Cumbia, psychedelic Cumbia, Cuban Son, Salsa, Vallenato, and Reggaetón, among others.

Tropical Gothic was a movement in cinema developed in the 1970's and 1980's in Cali, Colombia that appropriated the classical tropes of English Gothic literature and transposed them into 20th century Latin America. It used ghosts, zombies, and vampires as metaphors to highlight important social issues of the time—that are still relevant today— such as wealth inequality, extractivism and the deterioration of urban life. Mostly developed in visual terms, Dark and Hot aims to evoke gothic tropical through music and dance, and propitiate a moment with tropical music that is evocative of anything but happiness.

This performance is organized by Inés Arango-Guingue with FLEMING (sound) and Castroduperly (visuals).
