Madison Manning (she/they) is an artist, educator and lesbian. Manning holds a BFA in Jewelry Design + Metalsmithing from Texas Tech University and an MFA in Sculpture + Performance from New Mexico State University. Their art work has been shown at Trestle Gallery in Brooklyn, Woman Made Gallery in Chicago as well as throughout Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, and New Mexico. Manning’s article, “Honest Queer Art Education in the South,” was published in Visual Arts Research Journal: Queering Art Education. She has presented their research on queer, camp, and transfeminism at the Southeastern College Art Conference (SECAC) and Foundations in Art: Theory & Education (FATE). In the summer of 2021, Manning was Penland School of Craft’s Andrew Glasgow Writer-in-Residence. They are currently an adjunct at Chicago State University.
New to Chicago, Manning is looking to introduce themselves and expand their community. Following a short talk about past work, inspirations, and connections, the program will transition into an open-form discussion and critique of Manning’s new work. After a traumatic brain injury in 2021, Manning’s practice has shifted. Trying to work out what is home, what home looks like and where home/work stop, meet, start, separate, blend together, overlap, implode, Manning presents crocheted sculptures, objects, drawings and offerings for Home.
